Draft Gloucester Playing Pitch Strategy

National planning policy requires local authorities to carry out an assessment of the needs of communities for sports and recreational facilities as well as opportunities for new provision. Furthermore, the preparation and adoption of a Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS) forms an important part of the Council Plan 2014 – 2017.

The purpose of the draft PPS is to make sure that there is the right amount and type of playing pitches to provide for the community’s needs now and in the future. It will, for example, set a framework within which the Council, its partners, stakeholders, sports clubs and the community can work together to make improvements to playing pitches in the City. It will also provide the evidence to make sure important pitches are protected from inappropriate development and that new developments provide the right amount and type of playing pitches for the community’s needs.

With this in mind, the Council appointed consultants Knight Kavanagh and Page to prepare a PPS for Gloucester. It covers all pitch sports and their associated facilities and covers the period 2015 – 2025.

What we want from you

The Council is currently consulting on two documents and we want to know what you think.

The first is the draft PPS, which sets out a Vision, Aims and Recommendations for maintaining and delivering outdoor sports in the City. The second is the ‘Artificial Grass Pitch – Scenario Paper’. This looks at how different Artificial Grass Pitches (AGPs) could be delivered in the City, having regard to the needs of the different sports.

A summary of the draft PPS and AGP Scenario Paper has been prepared and also includes some key questions for you to answer.  In addition, the full Assessment Report is provided as background information.
