Preparing a Heritage Strategy for Gloucester #glosheritage

As part of the Great Place scheme the City Council has been awarded money to prepare Heritage Strategy for 2019 to 2029.  We have commissioned Urban Vision Enterprise CIC to complete the work and this is the first stage of that process.

The aim is to promote the adoption of a positive, dynamic and holistic approach to heritage within the City, making the best use of heritage assets to maximise benefits for regeneration, museums, archives, economic development, tourism and the community.

The final strategy will provide a key component of the evidence base to inform the emerging Gloucester City Plan and its policies.

Urban Vision Enterprise CIC will be undertaking a wide ranging consultation programme to inform the preparation of the strategy, between Friday 1 June and Friday 30 June 2018.  This consultation seeks to establish your thoughts and perceptions on heritage and its role in the City from a wide range of stakeholders whether you are a resident, business, tenant, developer or visitor to the city.

There will also be the opportunity to attend a drop in event to discuss Gloucester's heritage and its role for the city on the on Wednesday 27th June between 5pm and 7.30pm in the Fisher Room, Gloucester Guildhall, 23 Eastgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 1NS.

To inform your response, we've set out a list of questions and you can access these by clicking on the link further down this page.  You can respond online, or by completing a downloadable form and emailing to or posting to Heritage Team, Gloucester City Council, Herbert Warehouse, The Docks, Gloucester, GL1 2EQ.

In addition, we are interested to understand what you components of Gloucester's historic landscape you really enjoy, or those elements that you think could be improved.  Let us know on twitter (ideally with a photo) using #glosheritage.

To help you in responding, the following is a definition of what constitutes heritage, taken from the International Cultural Tourism Charter (ICOMOS, 2002):

'Heritage is a broad concept and includes the natural as well as the cultural environment. It encompasses landscapes, historic places, sites and built environments, as well as bio-diversity, collections, past and continuing cultural practices, knowledge and living experiences. It records and expresses the long processes of historic development, forming the essence of diverse national, regional, indigenous and local identities and is an integral part of modern life. It is a social dynamic reference point and positive instrument for growth and change. The particular heritage and collective memory of each locality or community is irreplaceable and an important foundation for development, both now and into the future.'
